To start with, first i must state categorically that i am a law abiding citizen, i don’t take things for granted most especially when it comes to banking or money matters…winks (who no like money?). I carried most of my transactions online as that has afford me the time and convenience since i started using online banking over 2 years ago.
I got shocked on Sunday evening 1st of Nov 2015 when i logon to my GTBank internet banking to send a payment to someone and got a pop-up message saying “Account Is Restricted for Online Transaction”. See snapshot below;
I was still skeptical and surprise thinking what could have happened that lead to the restriction on my account; a thought came in my mind of the BVN palava but i dismissed it immediately without thinking twice knowing fully well that i already did the BVN registration exercise a year ago in UBA and already linked it to my GTB accounts via internet banking. While i keep pondering, i asked someone to send me some money which got credited and reflected….Waoooh, amazingly; i can receives but can spends or withdraw…The bank must be crazy…lol.
The next morning been on Monday, the first working day of the week (you know what i mean now; the crowd), i was among the first set of people to stormed GTB Abule Egba branch, Lagos. I was there as early as 7.20AM waiting for the 8.00AM official opening time to customers. O boy, come and see crowd, over half of the people outside already talking and deliberating on BVN problem, complaining of account restrictions, unable to use ATM, then i knew my case was likely the same.
I complaint to the bank customer officer who checked my account and told me my BVN number done in UBA was not linked to my GTBank account which was the reason for the restriction. WTF!!!, i was mad for few seconds because i remembered linking it via internet banking and even goten a success message. To cut the long story short, i was given the BVN linking form which i quickly filled imputing my 11 digit BVN and other details. I was told it will be effected and the restriction removed on my account within 24 hours.
How I Fasten the Process
If you are in my shoe, you can fasten the process with any of the two tricks. This will work only for those wo already have the BVN and initially tried linking it via internet or ATM but not really linked to their GTB account. This process might also works or similar to other banks. Just enquire from your bank.
First method:, If you have balance on your account and have your BVN with you, go over the counter to try a withdrawal, when they cashier tell you about the restriction, gave him/her your BVN and indicates you’ve tried linking it before either via internet banking or ATM
Second method:, Give a call to GTBconnect and they will ask you some questions to verify ownership of your account after which they will request the BVN from you and your account restriction removed in few minutes.
Conclusion: Trying to link your BVN via internet banking or ATM is a wash as most people who did that initially have to still go to the bank to complete the same process which means it’s not working.
