1. Openphoto
It first appeared back in 1998, and so it’s no surprise that Openphoto has now built up a solid collection of stock photos. They’re neatly arranged into well-chosen categories, and clicking any of these leads on to a thumbnail gallery of related shots.

2. Flickr: With a wealth of images and a simple advanced search for CC images, Flickr is a go-to for tapping into millions of images.

3. FreeDigitalPhotos.net: Only the small sizes of images are free. And keep in mind that they require attribution on all free images used (HTML code is offered, too), and your email address must be provided.

4. Stockvault.net
Stockvault has a small but very high quality collection of stock photos, as well as logo templates, clip arts, textures and backgrounds. It’s the perfect site to find graphics for your website, then, but beware – Stockvault‘s images are free for personal, non-commercial use only

5. Pixel Perfect Digital
This interesting site includes over 4,000 stock photos, neatly organised in categories from Abstract and Animals to Places and Transportation. The best part of Pixel Perfect Digital is the collection of digital art and illustrations, though; stylish images that are hard to find elsewhere.

6. Foter.com: Great range of images (but searches for “coffee” brought up a surprising number of images of young girls in suggestive situations). You can search for CC images specifically permitted for commercial use with the tick of a box.

7. FreeRangeStock: Royalty-free images abound, about 50 percent high-quality, 50 percent novice. It makes you jump through hoops to download images while promoting its brand via your social media accounts, so just scroll down the pop-up download window to ignore the cries for promotion.

8. Free Digital Photos
There are just a few images here – searching for “cat”, say, returns only 13 photos – and only the relatively low resolution (around 640 x 480) versions are free. Free Digital Photos requires a credit if you use one, too. It does have some excellent shots, though, and could be just what you need to spice up a personal website.

9. Photopin.com: Created to help bloggers easily and correctly attribute photos, Photo Pin offers one of the more seamless user experiences on this list. Be sure to select the “commercial” tick box to search for CC images. (However, at the end of the day, this is just another site utilizing Flickr’s API to present photos in an alternative view.)

10. Stock.XCHNG
This fabulous site has a library of almost 400,000 images covering every topic, and is probably the best place to start your search for free images. Stock.XCHNG has a more complex image licence agreement than some of the competition, though, so read that carefully before you start.

Conclusion: It’s better to always shop for photos from any of these websites rather than downloading from public domain / search engine like Google or Yahoo as this prevent issue and case of copyright infringement suit in future.
